Our aviary started with a small shed and an outside flight. The shed was 7'x7' and the flight was probably about 2'x7'.
It took Hugh less than a week to put it all up, starting with the concrete base. He insulated all the walls before erecting the shed.
Over time we have made some changes to the size of the aviary, we added on an extra 2' to the shed, then we moved the outdoor flight so that it was even closer to the house. Since then we made the birdroom smaller by increasing the size of the inside flight.
As a starter aviary, with more than enough room for 30-35 budgies and 3 double breeding cages, I found my aviary to be just perfect. I had no need to have it any bigger until my collection of birds grew to be almost 50 budgies and 8 cockatiels housed together. My aviary is now 7' x 12', of which 7' x 6.5' is indoor flight, the birdroom is 7'x 5.5'. The outside flight is 10' x 4.5'
I will add a list of materials and measurements needed for my starter aviary to this page soon. I will also add pictures or video of the way it looks now.
30th March 2009: As promised, a few updated pictures
The pics were taken at night, and as you can see, every single one of my birds decided to go through a moult at the same time due to us finally having a little bit of sunshine hahahaha
